Pandora
On Thursday I went to a gathering of people interested in online radio. We were brought together by Tim, one of the founders of Pandora. It's internet radio but you set up station based on your preferences and thanks to the Music Genome Project it knows what you like and plays it. I am setting up stations often but I have only touched a small part of its potential. It's been even more interesting since I am able to connect with my iPhone.
I appreciated that nearly 60% of the artists represented are independent, unsigned. I look forward to the new music I will be exposed to because of it. I hope you check it out for yourself.
He talked a bit about broadcast radio and I was thinking about how little I have listened to it recently. I have satellite radio, internet radio and my iPod to offer me anything I want, when I want it, and without CENSORSHIP. It seems superficial but I don't know that I've really ever gotten over broadcast radio outlets (ahem Clear Channel even though they deny it) boycott of the Dixie Chicks. Of course, I have a personal connection to it but I am also deeply connected to the the broader injustice and impact it can and might effect me. That a corporation in one swoop could prevent me from consuming something because of some bureaucratic whim. What if it is something more serious? What happens on the day it's something I need. It smacks of the very religious and political intolerance that I dislike in this world. It's not quite up there with Walmart for me but it's dangerously close. I already avoid advertisers with honking horns and screeching tires that always scare me when I am driving.
So, when he said it was a goal to obliterate broadcast radio I cheered enthusiastically. I wasn't alone.
music
It's easy to become complacent in the things that you are passionate about. Luckily, it is also still possible to be reminded of that passion. I had the chance to see Darrell Scott last night at Uncle Calvin's Coffee House. I was beginning to forget the things about music that inspire me and make me feel happy. His show reminded me ... his voice called to mind Willis Allen Ramsey.
I was thinking what an interesting pair they would make, a story teller and a master of the mixed metaphor. I'd like to hear what would be produced.
mr tambourine man
I've decided to spend the rest of my week anytime I am at my desk listening to the entire Bob Dylan catalog available to me online. His stuff that get covered is great. Then, I also hear these fantastic obscure songs either in soundtracks or covered live that also belong to him. I always wonder why I don't have any of his stuff. He's not the only one. I should make a list and just do it with everyone I've ever wondered that same thing about.
A few songs in and I really understand the comparison's that Adam Carroll gets to Dylan...more than Townes.
Galleywinter
I read the forums on this website, Galleywinter. I like all the great inside details you can find like Cory Morrow's newest cd was produced by Keith Gattis. Of course, it's like one big party all the time but those folks love Texas & Red Dirt music and that's always cool.
five songs
I was tagged. If you've done it already (or just think it's dumb) just ignore the tag.
List five songs that you are currently 'digging.' It doesn't matter what genre they are from, whether they have words, or even if they're not any good. But they must be songs you're really enjoying right now. Post these instructions in your LJ along with your five songs. Then tag five others to see what they're listening to.
In no particular order:
1. Happiest When I'm Moving - Susan Gibson (Oterspace)
2. Devils and Dust - Bruce Springsteen (Devils and Dust)
3. Sweet Carolina - Ryan Adams (Heartbreaker)
4. Nineteen - Jeff Black (Tin Lilly)
5. Johnny met June - Shelby Lynn ( Suit Yourself)
music stuff
well, Oklahoma wasn't terribly spectacular but they have amassed a fine little riverwalk with shops and restaurants and bars. It's no San Antonio but hey there was also no crowd. I was a little disappointed that there was no one I wanted to see at the Wormy Dog Saloon. Sometime I catch a show there. I am planning to go back in early August for a Blue Door show.
I didn't take a single picture.
Here's my offering for a few favorite bands around town in the next few days or so. It's susan loaded because...well because she's my favorite and she's "schlepping" her new cd all over town. Of course it's not intended to be a great big all encompassing list, just those I like to recommend.

a review of Outerspace
I don't think I'd make a good reviewer. You have to have the ability to write critically and I just don't have the skills. But, I'll tell you Susan's cd is exceptional. ..so here's my amateurish review.
In Outerspace, songwriter Susan Gibson has found a cd that is travelling in the same direction as her unique personal style. Using skillful and mature variations in the delivery of each song, it stands out like the songwriter herself, being unique in some ways and traditional in others. Her second solo effort is packed full of a variety of styles from country to folk to simple down home roots-rock. She'll even tell about her Methodist rap song in her introduction to "No Fair", sure to come with "potato chips sprinkled on top". With the addition of some ethereal qualities like the ones found on "Still Time", it is suitable to represent the title, Outerspace. She is even bold enough to experiment. While it is not this reviewers favorite result, she gets points for keeping true to her own creative vision. This is her most collaborative project to date with cowriters like Jim Lauderdale, "Happiest When I'm Moving"; Randy Scruggs, "Upon Re-entry" and others. A live version of "Wide Open Spaces", penned by Gibson and made one of the most recognized country songs of all times by the Dixie Chicks is included.
whatever, i tried.
