tap a toe

Most mornings, I wake with a song in my head. Because I go to see live music on a regular basis it is often obvious why a particular song is stuck there. But on other occasions, I find myself wondering why 'this song'? Especially when I sure I haven't heard a song in awhile.

Usually, it's just one line that repeats over and over. Stuck like a broken record. Sometimes it takes all morning to get it out of my head. So, most of the time I find myself also wondering if there is some significance in the line.

This morning, I was playing Sugarland's version of a Matt Nathanson tune, Come on Get Higher.

"come on get higher, loosen my lips. faith and desire and the swing of your hips"

Over and over. I think I'll just start writing them down and see if a pattern emerges.

music stuff

well, Oklahoma wasn't terribly spectacular but they have amassed a fine little riverwalk with shops and restaurants and bars. It's no San Antonio but hey there was also no crowd. I was a little disappointed that there was no one I wanted to see at the Wormy Dog Saloon. Sometime I catch a show there. I am planning to go back in early August for a Blue Door show.

I didn't take a single picture.

Here's my offering for a few favorite bands around town in the next few days or so. It's susan loaded because...well because she's my favorite and she's "schlepping" her new cd all over town. Of course it's not intended to be a great big all encompassing list, just those I like to recommend.

looking forward to the music

I've been a bit depressed by the internet lately. The thing about learning new things is also learning how much you don't know. And, I am an infant baby.

But, there is some exciting music options to keep my spirits up this month. I will finally realize a long desire to see Shawn Mullins live and Edie Carey returns to this part of the country again later in the month. It's nice to have a folk influx from the east especially since this will be the second Kerrville in a row that I will miss. Don't get me wrong but one can not live on Texas music alone.

This month also features another HOV tour with Walt, Susan and Brandon in which I will take at least a few days to follow them around.

Some of my other projects are falling away from my attention too. I know I need to focus on at least one soon. Well, hey, I at least made the time to try and create something here.

breakdown

Well it's back to work after a week of...well, work.

I spent most of last week with hayseed, after work, following Susan Gibson, Walt Wilkins and Brandon Rhyder around on tour. When they did the Wichita Falls show, it was lucky I was really following them. When I hit Decatur, I topped a hill to see the Suz van on the side of the road, hood up and three musicians wandering around the ditch with cell phone in each ear. That's Walt in the background.

The van was repaired but not fixed so a couple of more miles down the road, it was left at the citgo station and the xterra added three musicians, their luggage, as many guitars and a dog. We made Wichita Falls in time for them to perform and then returned them the next day back to the van. Hayseed and I waited for them at the dealership to learn they would have to limp along until the van made back home to the Austin area so they cancelled the other Oklahoma gig that night. They managed to pick an opening gig in exchanged for a hotel room. Can you imagine being the girl who gets Susan, Walt and Brandon to be her opening act?

We finished out our stalking with the show in Waxahachie instead of their last show the next day in Gruene. Could have gone but hayseed had to be back that night for work the next morning. I didn't have the sack to make what would have been nine or ten hours in the car. We would have only been able to see a small part of the music festival and honestly, I was getting cranky...but that's another story.

With my rather amazing new camera, I got great pictures from the shows. Still have another set to get upload to the site...I've got some journal stuff too but I still haven't finished the journal entries from this summer's trip so I am not putting any real pressure on myself. I've barely focused enough the get a few more poems up. Everything takes too long these days. I run out of time every day.

I plan to be stationary until after my birthday at least. I need some brief hibernation to restore some of my energy.

where've you been, i've looked for you forever and a day

I guess I took a unexpected long break from writing. It took me forever to catch up on all my friends post. just a warning, this might get long.

Sometimes I complain about being busy for work but man! Since December, it feels like I have been non-stop 18 hour days. In a good way. So many things have been happening. I've been learning more about public relations than I could have ever dreamed with corporate sponsoring, a new image, a new corporate logo, and a new magazine; I've been trained to deal with the media during a crisis; and then the conferences, conference and more conferences.

Last week I was in Orlando for our national meeting. I wish there was more to say but it was all work and frankly, I am finding it increasingly boring to keep talking about it. So, I am moving on to the more interesting topics.

The International Society of Poets was also having their big annual conference at the same hotel in Orlando. Talk about a diverse group of people. In one walk down the hall, I saw every ethnicity, every generation, all sexualities and genders, several disabilities and a dwarf. One afternoon while having a small meeting outside, we were treated to recitations of poetry from the adjacent table. Blah! But she had one of the silver bowls. Winner in some category of what must have been a million categories by the number of big silver bowls walking around attached to members of the diverse group.

After a week and a day in Orlando I came home for a one day, then turned back around to Kerrville for another meeting. Luckily, Monday night at the Inn of the Hills is live music night. This is why I like meetings in Texas. With little or no effort, I can find music in the places I have to go to work and on any night of the week. Brandon Rhyder and Drew Womack performed this last show. The special or at least interesting treat of the night was when Charlie Robison showed up just to watch the show.

No one believed me that it was him at first but after I went and got his autograph they finally conceded. Eventually, this group of camp directors got him to come over to their table. It should be noted that by that time, Charlie was good and drunk....a good and fun loving honest drunk! He told a story about a bet with Tuff Hedeman, Billy Bobs, a thousand dollars and a single punch. Charlie pulled a wad of bills from his pearl snap shirt pocket and dropped them haphazardly on the table to demonstrate that he won. I even managed to offend him when I said...make sense you won, he's a little fella like most bull riders. I think I was lucky he was drunk. He still managed to shoot me a look and even started to say something but he was so drunk he lost his thought midway. He had to be carried out a short time later. Should I met him again, I doubt he'll even remember me much less my offending remark. I kinda hope I do met him again. I think he's quite facinating. He's a real cowboy and you know, I dig real cowboys...

My birthday's coming up soon. I already got a fantastic present. The Nikon D70 digital SLR It's the sweetest thing ever...I'll have pictures up on my website soon enough. This week, I am taking off work to follow Susan, Walt and Brandon who are touring together all over Texas and Oklahoma. I'll finish the tour at Gruene which has to be the best place ever to see live music.

On a bit of a tangent, is anyone else sick of Norah Jones being on every soundtrack to every love story movie out these days?

Now I think I'll go do some much needed work around the house. Hopefully, I'll keep up better in the future.

music weekend

Catie Curtis is playing here in Dallas tonight and that hillbilly pilgrim guy, Mark Erelli is opening for her. I have his cd (a gift) but it just hasn't grown on me yet. Maybe I'll find something in his live performance, I've yet to discover in the recording.

There's so much music this week. It comes in waves. I'm not so sure if I've got the wherewithall to make all the shows. Sunday's a given. Susan and Walt in one place. Friday is a challenge... Poor David's is hosting Hayes Carll but the tea room has Melissa Ferrick. I like her enough but her shows are more about the people who show up than the music itself. Better than the bar. However, when you're not looking what's the point?

Saturday, Terri Hendrix is playing a coffee house show in Ft Worth. I suspect I'll go but two nights in a row in Ft Worth is a haul even for me dedicated music lover.

a rube

I don't know why I played that card. Jealousy as it is called by some. I’ll call it flagrant flirting to be on the safe side of any emotional connection.

It comes from knowing just enough to know I don't know anything...in a favorite book let’s say where words are placed strategically on a page.

A rube. I’ve always wanted to use that word to describe someone. Even myself if need be.

Though it never really fits.

Nothing ever really fits. Someone hangs to loosely there or it is too tight across the chest here. Once or twice just too long and often enough just too damn short. Even favorites begin to fray at the sleeve or on the hem. I’ll change shirts five times before I settle on the one to wear out. Why should anything else be any different?

But enough of that. In case anyone might be wondering why I am totally in love with Walt Wilkins, here's a picture I took tonight.

The time for sleep is now.
